I filled up my car at the weekend, and never realized you could squeeze 50 litres in the tank, I did a round trip to Bristol with mixed driving, some of it with a heavy right foot, When I got back I had covered 320 miles with a quarter tank left, I figured this was around 37mpg, is that possible in a 2litre? With my old engine I almost had to fill up again at the 320 miles per tank range, What do you guys average on the run?

Hey duemila-

I think that sounds possible- see attached images of the odometer reading against a depleting tank of fuel from the year before last, on a Major drive from Edinburgh to the Bouremouth and back up to Stoke, via a refuel in Oxford.

I'm driving the 1.8 CF2

I was quite pleased to have pulled out, over 400 before the fuel light came on

The readings are from a completely full tank, when the odometer was zeroed. The gauge / sensor is quite logarithmic, with '300 miles' from the top half of the gauge alone.

That's really good Dante, something in my old engine could have been off not sure what, but I rarely got over 320 on a tank, and to be honest the last few years I haven't kept much of an eye on it as the bulb has gone on my mileage reading, despite replacing it, it still doesn't light up but if I shine a torch in it I can see the readings

These 145s are very capable of getting 39 to the gallon. I used to do a lot of motorway mileage at 80+ and it would always return well over 35mpg. Pretty sure it would be just under 450 miles a tank.

I think I have found that getting higher RON / octane rating fuel noticeably gets you more per gallon than 'standard' fuel. I remember driving round the USA last year, getting Premium meant I had to fill up less because I guess that with more energy in a given quantity of fuel, maintaining the same driving style meant that the engine did not need to suck up as much fuel to maintain the same speed. So generally I always get Premium when I have to do a lot of driving.

This also seems to apply to my 145 - because of my setup I now use 97+ RON and I seem to need to fill up less.

now; that's interesting

I've always tried to use 95 octane, because I like giving the engine an easier time

it probably runs a little bit cooler and has 'less' burn from each compression- I'd always imagined it was sort of 'economy' fuel in terms of head & valve-seal longevity.

Perhaps that's an illusion.

Maybe I'll give high-octane a whizz for a bit, and see what happens
