I think that's the key point - matching the revs whilst shifting when you have no syncromesh is pretty important to avoid crunching a gear change - and that means heel-and-toeing to blip the throttle if you happen to be braking whilst downshifting.

With syncro gearboxes you don't need to heel and toe while changing gear at all... and I'd argue that if you're braking and downshifting then the extra engine braking you'll get by not blipping the throttle on downshift is potentially worthwhile.

That said - a nicely-timed gearshift with perfect rev-matching is a lovely thing indeed...
