Hmm..

can't work this out.

Being the owner of a (W-plate) CF2 T spark (1.8), I thought I was running Motronic M1.5.5

CF2 has one temperature sensor for the engine coolant, and this goes back to the ECU and it derives a feed for the gauges from there. The sensor is a four core (I think..?)

Just thumbing through the schematics and I reach 55-36C Motronic M1.5.5, and it shows TWO temperature senders, one of which is a three core, and the other a two core.

Now, alright- I'll buy that I maybe can't remember my own sender 'exactly'- it could well have the plastic body for four connections, but only use three (that would fit), but what is the second temperature sensor; 'S7'..? And why does the schematic describe my known sensor 'L7' as for the temperature gauge..?

does this stuff have to be taken with a pinch of salt? Asterisks on the drawing suggest that the three pin sensor was from May '98; does that mean the other one is omitted..?

Sorry- a bit of a boffins' question this one...!

You could plug MES and check which Motronic version you've got to be sure.

Also worth checking wiring diagram for instrument cluster 55-17. As far as I understand up to '98 there were two sensors - one for gauge, one for ECU. From '98 they started using one sensor for gauge and ECU

Yes, you do have Motronic 1.5.5.

The temp sender in your thermostat body supplies both ECU and temp gauge - rather than there being two separate senders, as per the CF1/alloy top motor.

There are more terminals on the CF2 sender as a result - three instead of two, IIRC.

But does this mean there are actually two distinct senders in the same unit for the CF2 variant - perhaps that explains why the schematic shows two senders? Otherwise, why the additional terminal?

well, that's genuinely quite interesting to me

And explains the three wire configuration

Thanks

#1 goes into temperature gauge, ground through sensor case
#2-3 go into ECU
