I may be taking out the front seats again soon in the 146.gif and I'm trying to remember the trick for avoiding the airbag light..

Is it 'enough', to do whatever I want and complete it, whilst the ignition is OFF, or will the airbag ECU 'know' upon power up, that I've been fooling around..?

I thought I read somewhere, that if I disconnect the battery from the car, half an hour before fooling around with the seats, then it doesn't know what has happened, upon reconnection...

One of these 'truths' is true- can anyone say which one...??

Thanks!

I think that is correct - disconnect the battery first. It's advisable anyway if disconnecting airbags as they are explosive devices and you don't want to accidentally set one off!

Yes, if you conect and reconnect your seats while the battery is disconnected then you shouldn't be triggering the airbag light.

(Unless of course you end up with a poor contact on reconnection.)

IIRC if this happens you'll need to use a diagnostic tool to clear the error even once the poor contact is fixed.

If you want to do this yourself I think you'll need the paid-for version of MES (given yours is a late model) - if you don't already have a copy...

(thanks Jeremy)

as it happens- I now have a bigger problem!

I disconnected the battery, and was this afternoon swapping my complete interior for a Momo black leather one from another car, and all was going well.

Going well, until I realised that the 'new' front seats, DIDN'T have side-airbags in, like the ones I had just take out...

Airbag light; ON

so, any clue about how to go about this? Presumably there must be an airbag ECU for cars without seat-airbags from earlier in the production run? Could anybody say what such an ECU would be?
Does anybody have a car (145 included) with JUST front airbags, and is in a position to quote me the flavour of ECU..?

Thankyou

I'm assuming you've already tried to get the ECU from the car that donated the leather interior?

Anyhow, I need to take the stereo out of my 146 (as it ain't working) so will see if I have the correct leather/ECU combo for you - will let you know...

Oh, THAT'S interesting- thank you Jeremy.

No, the interior in question, was in turn from another car, before the car I got it from, and THAT car must have been setup without side airbags and had an ECU to fit.

The vehicle I have just removed them from, indeed had the cables (unplugged) under the seats, and the lamp removed from the dashboard...

OK, so the leather seats in my car DO have airbags - below is a pic of my airbag ECU which I suspect is the same as yours... part no. 46548396

... but a quick investigation on ePer reveals the following part numbers from the 99-00 model year cars:

... and the Compatability note for the "E505" entry says "Side Airbag" - so maybe you should be looking for one of the other ECUs, namely 46746842 or 46538798?

There are several of these available on eBay from overseas sellers, around the 50 mark.

No idea if you'd run into compatability issues with the car's other systems - but I imagine the airbag system is fairly self-contained...?

Good heavens- I can't believe how far you've gotten with that, Jeremy!

Thankyou for looking into it- that info is much appreciated.

From this end, I looked into 'Alfa Romeo side airbag delete' posts on Forums, spoke to my local specialists, and also printed out all the relevant schematics in A3.

Yes, the system is self contained.

I've a couple of tricks up my sleeve after all, it would seem. Watch this space. I 'may not' need to go as far as another ECU.

But we'll see.

For the sake of completeness; here is mine;

Cool - you have one of those ECUs from the ePer list above, so we're in the right ballpark.

Is the workaround to insert some resistors into the seat wiring to mimic the missing airbags?
