Guys, today I was all day trying to remove the engine of an alfa romeo 145 QV.

I was looking at the workshop manual today and it says I have to take out the gearbox to remove the engine.

Does anyone know if it is possible in this car to remove the engine without first removing the gearbox?

Noticed that people get it off from bottom, someone know if is possible to remove just the engine from top and without the gearbox?

hi samsagaz,

you seem to have asked the question from two different ways there;


In your first post you say;

"know if it is possible in this car to remove the engine without first removing the gearbox?"

and in your second;

"know if is possible to remove just the engine from top and without the gearbox?"


but anyway- I would think the entire unit; gearbox & engine will come out as one. You'd have to back it into the gearbox-side wheel arch, and then come up at an angle, from the belts side of the engine.
For clutch changes; it must be possible to separate the two in the bay; but it depends on what you want to do? Do you NEED the gearbox off the block?

I personally, would go for removing the whole unit (gearbox & engine) as one; as trying to reach all the bolts and undo them, and separate the two parts in the car could be very difficult.

I asked again because i found some posts of ppl remove it from bottom, and i was trying all the day removing from top :/

I just need to remove the engine to change oil pump, pistons, connecting rods, metals. and want to measure if the crankshaft are OK, because have some strange noise from the crankshaft.

(sorry for my english)

I have just separated the gearbox from engine on my 147 Lusso. A real pita. I would recommend taking the whole engine out the top at an angle as Dante suggested. The amount of work involved in separating the gearbox from engine might as well go into the whole unit removal.

Have done this a few times. They come out the bottom very easily. Take off the rad pack etc, swing it all forward and it just drops straight out. No need to separate box or drop subframe.

I can't tell if that's sarcastic! Even if it is I'll gladly offer any specific advice although have always been too lazy to write how-to guides.

One top tip: don't try to undo the kingpin bolt in the centre of the side engine mounts unless you want to (try to) replace them, and they are very hard to find. Instead, undo the three bolts that hold the whole mount in place and drop the engine complete with mounts.

I might be hanging around here a bit as I work on my latest GTV project (their forum is s**t) so just ask if you need anything.

The workshop manual describes how to remove the engine and gearbox complete from under the car (as per Cloverleaf76ís posts).

However, itís written from the perspective that you have the car on a lift!

If you donít have one available then I guess youíd need to disconnect everything from the top of the engine, then jack the car up and support it high enough to drop the engine out, then drop the engine/gearbox.

It would be great to get a POV from those who have done this if up or down is the best way to go if you donít have a lift available. And if down, do you support the engine from above on a sling or from below on a jack?

Any takers?

I'm really not sure it'll come out the top due to the size of the hole, and the crane is going to be very unstable with engine and box high enough to clear the front cross member.

Put the car on your tallest axle stands and take it out the bottom on a sling. The weight is too eccentric to safely balance engine and box on a jack, and the sump isn't strong enough to take the point load on a jack anyway so use a sling at either end.

When it's on the floor either roll the car on its rear wheels out of the way, or even put the whole engine/box assembly on the front legs of your crane, using some 6x2s or scaffold boards to spread the load. Which of these strategies you use will depend on your workspace / the height of your axle stands etc.
