Your problem could be pressure in the aircon circuit, unless there is enough refigerant the pressure switch will not engage the compressor. Meaning a regass may sort the problem, unless you have a leak. When did you last have the aircon system regassed?
You could also have a faulty compressor, a mobile aircon specialist will know for sure

I must admit I've not looked into it at all yet - I thought I wouldn't really need AC, but this hot summer with the black leather seats has changed my mind! The chap I bought it off last year said that he'd had it pressure tested and it was fine so thought it was probably the pressure switch, but I've since been told by my Alfa specialist that the AC systems tend to be quite robust so although possible, it's probably unlikely. Hopefully you're right and it just needs a re-gas.
