hehe, glad some of you enjoyed the vid smile.gif

Paul, I always assumed that the RUF had the same 4 speed box that the standard 911 turbo of that time had. He only uses 4 gears around the lap, and with a vmax of 211mph then first gear must be good for 70mph or so which would be plenty for A-F and Wehrseifen.

When I get around to it I have a few other Nurburgring video gems to upload. How about Walter Rohrl in a 996GT3, or John Neilsen in an XJ220 pappap.gif
*

I had a quick look on RUF's website earlier in fact and they did develop their own 5-speed 'box for the YellowBird so I guess it must be a 'dog-legger'. Even with 469 bhp, 211 in fourth? Hmm, i'm not so sure!

Hmm, I've got a few 'ring vids meself, but nothing like the delicious sounding ones you're mentioning!!! If memory serves, the XJ220 held (quite surprising, really!) the lap record, for a while?! I'd love to see some footage of Rohrl in the GT3!

Yep, that makes more sense.

Back in september 1991 John Neilsen lowered the previous record to 7m47s in a full production spec XJ220 prototype. At the time the lap record for proper production cars (not the pseudo-racer Radical type of 'production' car) was 8m30, held jointly by the Honda NSX and Nissan Skyline. The video I have is not that actual lap unfortunately, but was filmed during the same test period as is still a very quick lap.

The Rohrl video is a Porsche promotional film and is a mixture of incar and trackside views, with a good dose of marketing BS in the commentary.

Without wishing to inflate any egos, I guess it comes down to the old question of how good is the "nut behind the wheel" - in this case the evidence suggests that Joel can drive and the Ferrari driver....can't laugh.gif

Just found a bunch of Ring photos from that weekend over on another car forum. Unfortunately the guy didn't take any shots of our Alfas (I have asked him) but instead was only concentrating on the more expensive machinery. Still, some most excellent photography....

Did anyone see the Cannonball 8000 prog that was on ITV the other night? They had a few minutes of Ring footage. There was even a silver GTV on there for about 0.5 seconds, not on track unfortunately - it looks like I drove in front of the camera while they were trying to film in the car park LOL!

Don't worry if you missed it, it's repeated on Boxing day on 'Men and Motors' channel at 1pm and 9pm thumbsup.gif

Fantastic video.

What a nutter..hence GTV nutter I guess.
All credit to you though, you drove superbly well. Do you instruct at the ring or something, or perhaps your a racing driver - the stig perhaps?
You and your GTV looked superb...you were not fighting that steering wheel much were you!
Looks and sounds a fast little car.

Just a few comments though:

1). I thought it looked incredibly dangerous do those sorts of speeds, especially with other slow people around! I know its meant to be a race circuit but by christ you have to have some nerve to drive at those speeds even if you know the circuit well.

2). Do they not either issue you or make you wear crash helmets?

3). Surely your tires after 1 lap must be knackered...there is a lot of screeching going on there and especially being fwd too!

4). The creaking noise sounds like the Cutty Sark...a hoy there sailor!!
No, seriously I assume this is the camera creaking not the car!

5). Whats your fastest ever lap? Does it compare to Sebrina in the Transit on Top Gear? laugh.gif wink.gif

Toby, this is Germany, not the nanny-state UK.

There are no compulsory helmets, no roll cages, no scrutineering. It is nothing like a a track day in the UK. You just turn up, buy a ticket from the machine on the wall and away you go! It's classified as a public road, so you even get coaches going round!! Hey, you could even take your caravan round if you wanted biggrin.gif

I took plenty of pics during our trip in September, they're still on http://sweens308.5133.fotopic.net/ if you want to get a flavour of the place!

Toby,

Thanks for your comments; I wish I was an instructor/racer/the Stig!

In response to your comments:
1). You only have to drive as fast as you feel comfortable driving. Despite how my video lap looked there were still a few corners, all of them fast corners, where I had quite a margin for error; Flugplatz, Schwedenkreutz and Mutkurve could all have been taken much faster. It had taken me three days of lapping, going progressively faster, before I was comfortable to attack some of those corners the way I did. I've only driven 23 laps at the Ring so I am still learning!
2). What Paul said smile.gif
3). Unless you are running soft trackday tyres then you should have no problem with tyre wear. The Conti Sport Contacts that were used still have several mm of tread left after 6000-odd miles off enthusiastic driving. Normal road tyres are tough old things.
4). The creaking was unfortunately the dashboard creaking as the bodyshell flexed under load. The sound was greatly amplified by my having taped the microphones directly onto the top of the dash (won't make that mistake again!). The car has done over 100k miles and it is a fact of life that things get a bit looser as they get old wacko.gif
5). The video lap is my fastest so far at 9m30s. The traffic cost me a few seconds and I could gain a few more seconds with more practise. This compares to Clarkson's 9m59s in the Jag and Sabine's 9m12s/10m8s in the Jag and Transit.

Glad to see all you Nurburgring enthusiast. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone thinking about it. I went several years ago to the Oldtimer races held at the modrn circuit and had quite a few laps round the old circuit in my then 164 3 litre which was brilliant. How anyone remembers all the cotrners though beats me.

Problem is, as you approach the corners, if you don't know them, you have no idea if they're fast or slow. There are many fast corners, but get it wrong and go into a slow corner too fast and you could be over the edge and lost forever. There aren't any marshalls, so unless someone sees you go you might never be seen again. It's all part of the fun.

I've recently found a great website at http://www.racinggreenmosler.co.uk/mt900s.asp which has a video with sound shot from a Mosler with an expert driver which moves extremely fast. Enjoy

If anyone fancies seeing a vid of Sabine racing a 997 last October, go to her website http://www.sabine-schmitz-motorsport.de/ and go to the 'Service' page.....

It's good!
