Hey,
Expect lots of speed cameras to disappear over the next 12 months. No money to fund them, and it costs more to prosecute, than the revenue that they earn!!!! Happy days!!

Hey,

The reason they are returning in Oxfordshire after a period of absence is because the council used to fund them and any revenue generated from caught speeders was just fed into the policing system so the council got nowt. Government cuts meant the council could no longer afford to run them when they weren't getting anything back. From the beginning of next month (April 2011) the cameras will be switched back on and are going to be funded by the police with any revenue generated from them being used to replenish that fund. So the cameras will effectively pay for themselves to be run with less "profit" from the revenue generated going into the policing system. I would expect other counties to follow suit with this same type of funding structure where the councils begin struggling to pay for the running of the cameras.

Fortunately, with modern sat navs and other devices detecting fixed cameras is pretty easy now so they are less of a threat - It's the mobile cameras that you need to watch out for.

I just don't get why forces still insist they are for "safety" when there is no evidence to back it up. Just don't get me started on the average speed cameras...

i will be amazed if your local force still pays for them after 12 months. My understanding is that they run at a loss, not a profit. Police forces are cutting their back office staff, so an increase in paperwork from Gatsos, won't be welcome. Staffs Police have turned all of theirs off. I think West mids are doing the same. our local "mobile" speed vans are run by a "road safety partnership" of some sort, but I am led to believe that they are fighting for funding too....

My licence is squeaky clean and I still think they are a s**t idea, sick of people slamming their anchors on all over lincoln every time they see signs or something with yellow painted on it grrrr

driving was a whole lot smoother and less dangerous before the fun prevention boxes

To be fair, the average speed cameras through roadworks are a good idea.

It improves the flow through roadworks generally apart from those numpties that still slam the brakes on everytime they pass the camera - think 'average speed' must be a difficult concept for some?

Also, these are actually there for the safety of the workforce - admittedly you rarely see anyone working but at least if they were they'd be safe biggrin.gif

at the end of the day though hitting someone at 50mph is still going to kill them.

But when people brake every time they see a camera p**ses me off! its only average speed anyway, so has to have a high threshold before you get a fine.

I generally go through at 55/60 and never been done yet. touch wood.
